Another mystery writer I got to meet at Malice Domestic was J.J. Murphy, who is a member of the Dorothy Parker Society and (in his words) an award winning health care writer. That should tell you all you need to know about his sense of humor and why he writes. Believe me, I once wrote direct mail pieces for a health insurance company and the subject is drier than any martini. Murphy looks like an insurance salesman – conservative hair cut and suit – but his wit is completely subversive.
Murphy’s series is set in the roaring 20’s and features the members of the Algonquin Round Table – and he captures their voices perfectly. I grew up reading Robert Benchley and Dorothy Parker and it’s such a pleasure to hear them once again.
